Need some help to grow your traffic with Pinterest?
You’ve spent months churning out great content, creating beautiful pins, joining group boards, pinning like crazy, and doing everything the gurus said. Still, you haven’t yet seen the avalanche of Pinterest traffic everyone talks about.
‘What I’m I doing wrong?’ you ask yourself. I know how frustrating it is to put in so much work and not get results. I was there not too long ago.
Then I rolled up my sleeves and studied Pinterest like I was studying for a test. Yes, I’m a Pinterest nerd. I’ve spent over $400 on Pinterest courses and coaching. Now, Pinterest consistently sends me 35k+ page views every month, and it’s climbing.
I’ve taught hundreds of bloggers about how to grow their traffic using Pinterest. Also, I’m the author of a Pinterest ebook for travel bloggers, Pinterest Traffic Takeoff. If you’re not getting the results you want, I want to help you turn that around, even if you have no followers. (Hint: you don’t need any followers to get traffic from Pinterest!)
Here’s how Pinterest transformed my traffic.
Okay, so how do you actually get traffic from Pinterest?
People who are successful on Pinterest have a strategy. They normally have 15-20 keyword-optimized personal boards and also join 20+ relevant group boards. But it’s not just a matter of creating beautiful pins and pinning them to 100 group boards.
- Are you using the right keywords?
- Are you pinning to the most relevant boards first?
- What colors and fonts do you use to make your pins?
- Are you using high-quality stock photos?
- Do your images match the topic of your posts?
- Are you tracking your performance on Pinterest?
- Are you making pins that scream ‘click me!’?
My Viral Pin Formula
After months of experimenting and creating hundreds of pins, I have identified six key features that make a pin go viral.
- A popular topic that people are actively searching for a lot on Pinterest (and Google.) It all starts with SEO research. I took a course called Pinterest Ninja, which makes Pinterest SEO really easy to understand. It was a game changer!
- High-resolution stock photos – paid stock photos are better because they’re more professional and fewer people use them. I have a subscription with Deposit Photos for $29/month, and it’s worth every penny. Since I started using professional stock photos, my pins went from 20-50 repins to 1,000+ repins.
- A background with warm colors – oranges and reds get twice as many repins than blues and greens.
- Easy-to-read fonts and text that tells viewers exactly what they’ll get. Be careful with fancy script fonts. They can work, but make sure they are legible.
- Long and vertical shape – Pinterest recommends 600 x 900. I create pins of different sizes to see which one does best. That said, my pins don’t get bigger than 735 x 1,400 (unless it’s an infographic) – Pinterest cuts them off at that point.
- A bonus offer, such as a printable, map, or worksheet. This is optional, but it gives people more incentive to click.
One more thing: pay attention to your conversions
The whole point of making pins is to get people to click over to your website. That’s why you need to pay close attention to your conversion rates. To figure that out, divide the number of clicks by the number of close-ups (you’ll see these numbers when you click on your pin.) With my Viral Pin Formula, I consistently create pins that get 60%+ conversion rates. That means that 3 out of every 5 people who click on the pin go over to your website. The pins below have conversion rates of 60% and 65%! I would say a conversion rate of 50% should be your aim.
