In this blog post, I will be discussing where to stay in Madrid, specifically the best neighborhoods and accommodations for solo travelers. Whether you are on a budget, looking for mid-range options, or want to splurge on a luxury hotel, I’ve got you covered!
Visiting Madrid
Madrid was founded in the ninth century by the Moors and became the capital of Spain in 1561. The city is home to some of the world’s most iconic art and architecture, including the Royal Palace, Prado Museum, and Retiro Park. Madrid is also known for its lively nightlife, delicious food, and friendly locals.

Within Madrid, there are a variety of neighborhoods that offer different experiences. Here is a brief overview of some of the most popular areas:
Sol

As the capital of Spain, Madrid is a bustling city with a lot to offer. If you’re looking for a central and convenient neighborhood, Sol is the perfect place for you. This neighborhood is home to Madrid’s most popular attractions, including the Royal Palace, Plaza Mayor, and Gran Via.

Details: This hostel is clean, comfortable, and offers a variety of amenities for guests.
Mid-Level Hotel Option: Hotel Francisco,
Details: This hotel is just North of Plaza Mayor and has elevated amenities without breaking the bank.

La Latina

Another excellent option for solo travelers is La Latina. This neighborhood is located in the heart of Madrid and is known for its lively atmosphere. This is the perfect place to go if you’re looking for good food, nightlife, and vibrant energy.

Details: This Arabic-themed hotel is very inviting and a great place to stay if traveling alone. They offer a unique experience at a very economical price.

Chueca

If you’re looking for a neighborhood with a more alternative vibe, Chueca is the perfect place. Named after its main plaza, Chueca is known as the Gay neighborhood among the locals. It is known for its eclectic atmosphere and diverse population. Check out the Mercado de San Antón and the Museo del Romanticismo while you’re in the area. For a solo traveler, Chueca is very welcoming and inclusive to anyone, and their lively cafes and shops are perfect for exploring alone.

Bordered by Gran Vía on the south, Calle Fuencarral on the east, Calle Carranza on the north, and Calle de San Bernardo on the west. Malasana is another excellent option for solo travelers. This neighborhood is known for its bohemian atmosphere and lively nightlife. It’s also one of the most popular neighborhoods for young people.
Budget Hotel Option: CC Malasana
Details: This hostel is a little pricier than other hostels but has much better ratings than the cheaper options. It’s better to spend a little more for a safe and clean stay, especially if you are traveling solo!
Mid-Level Hotel Option: Hotel Sterling – Gran Via
Details: This hotel is just a few steps from a subway and provides breakfast.
Luxury Hotel Option: Sonder Malasana
Details: This hotel is located right by Plaza del Dos de Mayo, next to a beautiful courtyard.
Lavapies

If you’re looking for a neighborhood with a more laid-back vibe, Lavapies is the perfect place. It is just south of central Madrid and is decorated with colorful murals and beautiful art pieces that accentuate Spanish culture. This neighborhood is known for its relaxed atmosphere and diverse population.

Details: This hostel is surprisingly cheap for its excellent reviews raving about the clean and comfortable rooms.
Mid-Level Hotel Option: Sleep’n Atocha
Details: This hotel is stylish and modern, has a complimentary airport shuttle, and is eco-friendly.
Luxury Hotel Option: Hotel Artrip
Details: This hotel is perfect for a traveler looking to visit all the art museums, as it is only a short walk from the Prado, Thyssen, and Reina Sofia Museums. They have a dedicated staff that can help you with any experience you are looking for in Madrid.
Retiro

Just south of Salamanca and east of the Retiro Park, Retiro is another great neighborhood for solo travelers. This neighborhood is known for its relaxed atmosphere and beautiful parks. Be sure to check out the Retiro Park and the Palacio de Cristal while you’re in the area. I lived here for an entire year, and I loved it! It was the perfect place to live as a solo traveler, and I never felt unsafe.
Budget Hotel Option: Oxygen Hostel
Details: This hostel has everything you need for a good night’s rest and a peaceful outdoor area where you can enjoy the views of Madrid all throughout the day.
Mid-Level Hotel Option: Petit Palace Savoy Alfonso XII
Details: This hotel is located right next to Parque de El Retiro.
Luxury Hotel Option: Hotel Palacio del Retiro
Details: This hotel is part of the autograph collection and is rated 5 stars for its amenities and amazing service.
Salamanca

In the Northeast sector of Madrid, Salamanca is one of the most upscale neighborhoods in the city. This neighborhood is known for its luxury shopping and high-end restaurants. It also has a lot of history and beautiful architecture. If you stay here, be sure to visit the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza and the Plaza de Colón. Since it is quite upscale, it is one of the safest areas in Madrid, especially at night – an excellent choice for solo female travelers that like checking out the nightlife and staying out.
Budget Hotel Option: Hotel Suites Barrio De Salamanca
Details: This hotel has many room options, even with a kitchenette for long-term stays. You can save even more by cooking instead of going out to restaurants.
Mid-Level Hotel Option: Velázquez 45 by Pillow
Details: This hotel is ideal for solo leisure travelers and business people alike. They have a varied breakfast and all the amenities you need for a great stay.
Luxury Hotel Option: Relais & Chateaux Heritage Madrid Hotel
Details: This beautiful hotel features uniquely decorated rooms and has a gorgeous terrace bar where you can grab a cocktail and some food before heading out for the night.
Moncloa

Moncloa is an excellent neighborhood for solo travelers who want to be close to the action but not in its middle. This neighborhood is home to the University of Madrid and has a lot of great bars and restaurants. Since the University is there, it also has a young and lively atmosphere.

Details: This simple hostel offers many different room options for budget travelers.
Mid-Level Hotel Option: Hotel Exe Moncloa
Details: This hotel is located just a few minutes from Parque del Oeste and Princesa Street and is elegantly decorated with inspiration from the Avant Gaurd.
Luxury Hotel Option: Hotel Atlantico
Details: Their prime location is right off of Gran Via. They offer many top-of-the-line amenities and benefits.
Chamartin

Chamartin is a neighborhood that is a bit further out from the city center but still accessible by public transportation. This neighborhood is known for its parks and green spaces. Charmartin is also where you’ll find the Prado Museum. Chamartin has a unique charm and is where I stayed the first time I visited Madrid back in 2012!
Budget Hotel Option: Senator Castellana Hotel
Details: This hostel is centrally located and solo traveler-friendly.
Mid-Level Hotel Option: NYX Madrid
Details: This hotel has comfortable, spacious rooms and a beautiful outdoor pool where you can relax after a long day of sightseeing.
Luxury Hotel Option: Canopy by Hilton Madrid
Details: This hotel focuses on its locality and culture, making for an immersive experience. And there are plenty of Instagram-able spots throughout the hotel – perfect for photos!
